MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Wednesday is one of the busiest travel days during Thanksgiving week as people head out of town for the holidays.
The busiest travel days during Thanksgiving week are usually Tuesday, Wednesday and the Sunday after the holiday. This year, the Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday would be the busiest travel day with roughly 48,000 scheduled flights.
Travel trends could even set a record this year, according to AAA.
The company predicts 49 million Americans will hit the road to visit family and friends.
Want to avoid the worst traffic? AAA suggests avoiding driving between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesday and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
The auto club said those will be peak hours on the road.
AAA said 4.5 million Americans will hit the skies between Wednesday and Sunday.
The Transportation Security Administration screened more than 2.6 million travelers on Monday, surpassing the 2.5 million screened the Monday before Thanksgiving in 2019.
The same trend occurred Sunday, marking the first year that the number of people catching planes on Thanksgiving week surpassed pre-pandemic levels.
On Wednesday morning, FOX13 captured long lines at Memphis International Airport before 5 a.m.
The check-in process seemed to be going smoothly, and no flights looked to be canceled or delayed.
Parking at the airport could be a daunting task, however, as lots filled up quickly.
One man told FOX13 it took him nearly an hour to find a spot inside the parking garage.
Travelers should plan to arrive early and allow themselves plenty of time before their flight.
