Elderly woman dies after alligator attack in Florida while walking dog

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. — An elderly woman in St. Lucie County, Florida has died after she was attacked by an alligator Monday.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission along with the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office were called out to the Spanish Lakes Fairways Community Monday for reports of an alligator bite Monday afternoon, according to WPEC.

The Spanish Lakes Fairways Community is a 55-plus living community located near Fort Pierce, WPTV reported.

Witnesses told investigators that the woman was walking her dog when she was attacked, according to WPEC.

Witnesses told WPTV that the dog was grabbed by the alligator and when the woman tried to get the dog away from the alligator it went after her.

The dog survived, according to WPTV. The extent of any injuries is unknown.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was 85 years old, according to WPTV.

An alligator trapper was called and was able to capture the 10- to 11-foot long and 600- to 700-pound reptile around two hours after the first 911 call, WPTV reported.
