ARLINGTON, Texas — Police arrested a suspected shooter Monday morning after gunfire outside Arlington’s Lamar High School left one student dead and another injured, according to multiple reports.
In a statement, police said they went to the high school just before 7 a.m. after getting reports of shots fired outside the building.
Update 3:40 p.m. EST March 20: One student injured in Monday morning’s shooting has died, Arlington Police Chief Al Jones said, according to the Dallas Morning News.
The second injured student, identified as a female, had injuries described by police as minor, according to the Morning News and police. She was driven to a hospital by a parent, officials said.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting remained unclear on Monday afternoon. Officer Jesse Minton said police were called just before 7 a.m. to an area outside the school that students frequently walk through while heading to the campus, according to WFAA. He said authorities believed the shooting might have been targeted and that the shooter did not appear to have planned to open fire at the school.
The shooter, who was identified only as a student, is facing a capital murder charge, KXAS-TV reported.
Police continue to investigate.
Original report: Two students were injured and receiving medical care following the shooting, although officials did not immediately share their conditions.
Police arrested a suspect, whose name was not released, a short while after arriving at the campus. Authorities said they did not believe the shooter ever entered the school.
The shooting happened about 35 minutes before classes were set to start at Lamar High School. Students returned to classrooms Monday for the first time following Spring Break, WFAA reported.
Officials with the Arlington Independent School District urged people to avoid the school campus as police continue to investigate. The high school was placed under lockdown following the shooting.
Arlington ISD spokeswoman Anita Foster told The Dallas Morning News that students will be released for the day after the lockdown is lifted.
