The National Weather Service Memphis says families should have a plan for what to do when severe weather hits.

People should seek the best available shelter immediately when a Tornado Warning is issued. Good options include an interior room of a well-constructed home or building and a basement.

Bad options for shelter include mobile homes, vehicles, beneath a highway overpass, large open rooms, and manufactured housing.

Once you are in the proper shelter, you should stay in place until you receive the all-clear, NWS says.

If you live in an apartment or dorm-style housing, you should go to the lowest possible floor in a central room, crouch under an indoor stairwell or an interior windowless hallway, and cover your head and neck from falling debris.

Heavy rain and strong winds could also bring power outages to the area.

Plan for outages ahead of time. Making sure you have adequate food on hand and a fully-charged cell phone can help in the event the lights go out.
