Violent tornado identified near Tupelo causing damages across parts of MS, NWS says

Tupelo, Miss. — The National Weather Service confirmed three tornado tracks left Sunday night near Tupelo, Miss.

NSW wrapped up work Monday evening and shared the following information:

• Pontotoc/Lee - EF-1 - 4.5 miles long
• Tupelo/ NE Lee County - EF-1 - 12.8 miles long
• Ratliff area (Itawamba Co) - EF-0 - 2.0 miles long

A large violent tornado was confirmed in northwest Chickasaw county, near Houlka, Miss. around 9 p.m. Sunday.

The tornado warning was upgraded to a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) tornado warning as it entered southeast Pontotoc County around 9:15 p.m.

The tornado continued into Lee County at 9:45 p.m. taking aim at the City of Tupelo.

By 9:53 p.m. the National Weather Service of Memphis issued a very rare Tornado Emergency for the City of Tupelo.

The Tornado moved through the west and north side of Tupelo city limits.

“Damage has been reported in the City of Tupelo,” said the Mayor of Tupelo. “Emergency crews are currently assessing the degree of damage. Please do not get out and drive. It is dangerous—-there are reports that power lines are down in the roads. We will update you as soon as we know the extent of the damage. Prayers that all are safe, and please keep our crews and first responders in your prayers also.”

The tornado continued as of 10:27 p.m. heading for northwest Alabama.

There has been one injury reported, just east of Tupelo on Elvis Presley. Furniture fell onto someone’s head and cut his lip.
