Shelby County prepares for severe weather, potential storm damage

DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. — Storms preparations are underway in Shelby County as severe weather is expected to track through the Mid-South today.

The severe storms are expected to bring heavy rain, wind damage, and possible tornadoes and large hail.

Residents are cautioned to prepare and plan ahead for potential impacts.

Some items on your emergency checklist should include having a plan for what to do if the power goes out, and knowing where to go to find emergency shelter.

Residents should clear debris out of storm drains, specifically leaves.

Clear out any leaves blocking your gutters.

Officials in the City of Memphis have been preparing for the storm, including planning for potential power outages.

MLGW crews are ready for 16-hour shifts and around-the-clock repairs, according to a spokesperson.

Customers should not assume MLGW knows about a power outage in the neighborhood; you should still call in an outage. That number is (901) 544-6500.

Public Works crews will be going around to help with storm damage.
