MLGW crews prepare for possible outages as severe weather moves in

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — MLGW is preparing for the cold weather snap that’s bringing dangerous temperatures to the Mid-South this week.

Rain is set to move in on Thursday, followed by freezing sleet and possibly snow.

Temperatures will stay below freezing during the holiday weekend, and the wind chill could be well below zero at times.

Wet, slick streets could be hazardous for drivers, and power outages at homes and businesses could be a concern.

MLGW said crews are preparing for weather-related outages, getting ready to work around the clock if needed.

MLGW has a preparedness guide to help you get ready for a weather emergency.

If customers have an outage, they can report it by calling 544-6500 or using their MLGW My Account, officials said.

While downed tree limbs could increase outages and damages, MLGW said it’s fallen behind goal for tree trimming this year.

The trimming cycle begins at the Mississippi River and crews work eastward to the Fayette County line.

Contracted crews regularly trim trees that potentially pose a hazard to a power line, officials said.

Customers can call the Customer Care Center at (901) 544-6549 if they are aware of a tree that is interfering with a power line or is in direct contact with one.

Remember, never attempt to trim limbs that are near or touching power lines. Be safe and call MLGW instead.

Officials said the severe weather could affect power lines and water lines, causing disruptions and outages.
