Mississippi River low water levels lead to unusual discovery of cars at Bass Landing

MISSISSIPPI — The Mississippi River has gotten so low it is revealing things that it has held secret.

In DeSoto County at Bass Landing Road, where it meets the river, two cars have been found that were submerged until the water.

FOX13 is talking with locals, and law enforcement and looking into how they think those rides made for the road wound up in the river.

When we started asking people what they thought and why the cars were in the Mississippi River, we got all kinds of answers.

“I think some people put them in there on purpose and then add insurance claims to them, but I think that stolen cars are out there also,” said Donna Harris of Nesbit.

The gas tank to one of the rides that was towed out two weeks ago sits along the river still. It had been in the water so long that it had freshwater mussels growing on it.

There were also other parts of the, what we’re told, appeared to be an SUV strewn among the concrete and rocks.

Both it and another car were found in an area where there is a sharp turn in the road along the river.

Nancy Stanford of Hernando had her own theory.

“Probably somebody years ago that ran off the road and got out but couldn’t get the car out,” Stanford said.

One frame of a car, according to locals, is a low water mark that was last seen in 1988.

We are told that it’s an old Monte Carlo that was found in the river back then, the county tried to get it out, but it was too full of sand to remove it then.

This is only the second time it’s been seen and it continues to stay in its resting spot in the river.

“I think that if the river gets any lower than it is they are going to find a whole lot more cars than what they have and there is no telling what else they will find out there,” Harris said.

We have reached out to the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department to find out what they can tell us about the cars.
