Adrian Charleston, Payne’s sister said, “Right now we don’t have nothing to be thankful for right now but just waking up.”

It’s not what you expect to hear from anyone during this holiday season, but it’s the harsh reality many families in Memphis are having to face.

“What happened to him?” Charleston said. “I can’t tell y’all what happened to him. We are trying to find out as well.”

Charleston said her brother was pursuing a rap career and went by the name Lil Slim.

She sayid his absence in the community is already being felt.

“He’s a very well know rapper,” she said. “Very well known activist at the Pursuit of God Church.”

MPD said this investigation is ongoing with no suspect information available right now.

“This makes a second child my mom has lost during this season. Plus a grandchild that was just murdered,” Charleston said.

She said she hopes when answers to what happened begin to come in, justice will come sooner rather than later.

“It hurts. It hurt real bad,” she said.
