FOX13′s School Supply Drive works to make sure every student has what they need

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — There are just a few days left in FOX13′s Family Focus School Supply Drive.

We’re almost at our goal and need your support.

FOX13 sat down with Natasha Oliver, a Bartlett mom, who said it takes the community to make sure students are ready for school.

“When you have more than one, it’s like being in the circus on the little tight rope. You’ve got to really balance yourself because each child needs something and not every child is going to need it at the same time,” said Natasha Oliver.

As a mom of four school-aged children, making sure each child has what they need for school is not only stressful, but financially draining.

“I look at it like grocery shopping, cause I have so much of it to do,” said Oliver.

Her to do list often includes scrolling through sales in search of the best deal for each child, one in pre-k, two in elementary school and one in middle school.

“He’s got four to five teachers and now everybody has their own list and their own things they need,” said Oliver

Like many parents, Oliver said she often relies on family and friends to make sure her children have school supplies, uniforms and more.

Communities in Schools, a non-profit which supports 7,000 students each year, works to make sure all students have what they need to graduate on time.

" We’re hoping our community will continue to rally over our kids and point and click, make those donations so we can get the supplies that our students need,” according to Communities in Schools of Memphis President Sonji Branch.

Natasha works hard to make sure her children always have what they need, but also admits a little help always goes a long way.

“I tell everybody, it do take a village and I love my village,” said Oliver.

Communities in Schools and Shelby County Schools are both beneficiaries of this year’s school supply drive.
