MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Dozens of people got a new reason to hope as an expungement clinic offered a chance for them to have their criminal histories cleared.
Held at the New Salem Missionary Baptist Church near Orange Mound, the clinic, held by Shelby County Criminal Court Clerk Heidi Kuhn said the clinic was the 18th she has held since being elected in 2018.
It was also a job fair.
Representatives from FedEx, FedEx Ground, Kroger, Goodwill, and MATA were on site.
”We’re offering people this expungement so they can go back to work, not a life of crime,” Kuhn said.
Each person was eligible to have up to two charges expunged from their record, Kuhn said, which meant two misdemeanors or one felony and one misdemeanor.
Eligible crimes were non-violent, Kuhn said.
”Since I was elected we have expunged over 5,800 people. So if you think about it, It’s not just expunging one person, it’s expunging a family and helping the community,” she said.
“It’s not just expunging one person, it’s expunging a family and helping the community,” she said.
Kuhn said there will be other expungement clinics in the future.
