Two MPD officers injured after cars crash into accident on I-40

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Four people, including two Memphis Police officers, were rushed to hospitals Tuesday morning after two different crashes on I-40.

MPD said that officers were working a four-vehicle accident on I-40 between Whitten and Appling around 1 a.m. Two people were taken to the hospital in non-critical condition from that crash, police said.

About an hour later, around 2 a.m., while officers were still on the scene of that accident, two cars crashed into their squad cars, according to MPD.

One of those cars stayed on the scene, but the other took off along I-40, police said.

Both of those officers were taken to hospital in non-critical condition, MPD said.

Memphis Police said the driver who stayed on the scene was detained.

The investigation into these crashes is ongoing.

There is a “Move Over” law in Tennessee that requires drivers to move over and make room when emergency responders are on the side of the road.

Just 10 days into the new year, Memphis Police officers had already been involved in 15 crashes. Officers were not found to be at fault in at least 9 of those crashes.
