Resources to help stay safe in Mid-South Heat Wave

MID-SOUTH — The Severe Weather Center 13 Team forecasts above-average temperatures for the rest of July. We will be near 100° or hotter for days.

The heat can be dangerous to your health, triggering serious conditions like heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

  • If you don’t have air conditioning and are looking for free ways to cool off, consider going to a library, community center, or some other air-conditioned building like a mall where you can sit down and cool off.

LIBRARIES

MALLS

Wolfchase Galleria is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday thru Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday & Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Oak Court Mall is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday thru Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Southland Mall is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday thru Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday & Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

  • You can also take advantage of local swimming pools.

City pools are free and open to Memphis residents. To access a City of Memphis pool, you need to fill out a form at your pool of choice and show proof of residency (Tennessee driver’s license, Military ID, etc). Parents must provide proof of age for children, but once you register, your information for entry will be kept on file.

The DeSoto County pool on Goodman Road in Olive Branch is open Monday thru Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Oxford Mississippi pool is open Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Many Mid-South museums have free days.

The Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum has “Shelby County Tuesdays” when admission is free for individuals and families.

Stax Museum also offers free admission to Shelby County residents on Tuesday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

On Wednesdays, admission to the Brooks Museum of Art is free.

It doesn’t cost anything to walk around inside the Bass Pro Pyramid or check out the Peabody Ducks.

You can also walk around inside Crosstown Concourse and check out some public art as well as artifacts from when the building was a Sears distribution center.
