MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Serving the youth and the community is important to Fifth Grade Teacher Rachel Helton.
As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., she said she’s made a lifetime commitment to serve and be a role model to her students.
“I’m able to reach the children here because they know me,” Helton said.
“They say, ‘There’s the pink and green lady, there’s the pink and green lady!’, because they know I’m serving. They’ve seen us out in the community. They’ve seen us here at the school cleaning up.”
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is an international service organization founded in 1908 with a mission to be of “Service to all Mankind.”
Helton is president of the local Phi Lambda Omega Chapter.
She said this year is a major milestone for the group.
“So, this is very exciting for Phi Lambda Omega Chapter,” Helton said.
“We are celebrating 20 years of service in Memphis and the Mid-South.”

Since it’s chartering in 2000, Phi Lambda Omega has awarded more than $15,000 in scholarships annually and provided countless hours of community service.
The chapter has worked with several organizations with an emphasis on education, health and wellness, the arts, economics and global impact.
“Last month we worked with Room In The Inn,” Helton said.
“That would be Target Three. Helping the homeless. We worked with Room In The Inn at Saint Paul Baptist Church and we served the homeless. We had care packages for them, and we also served them a delicious dinner.”
Helton said the community can expect even more in 2020.
“So, we will give out $20,000 to different organizations this year as well as do 20 service projects in the first quarter of the year,” Helton explained.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will celebrate 112 years of service on January 15.
Phi Lambda Omega will hold a Founders’ Day and Chartering Celebration January 18-19 at the Hilton in Memphis.
