MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis International Airport is promoting local student artists.
The airport recently announced winners for its 13th Annual High School Visual Arts and Photography Competition.
The walls at the Memphis International Airport display more than just flight schedules and ads.
Travelers will notice dozens of pieces of artwork created by Memphis area high school students.

It’s all a part of the Arts in the Airport Program.
“It felt amazing,” High School Senior Morgan Domek said. “I didn’t think I would win because it was such a risky idea.”
The airport received 280 submissions for the art contest with 37 selected as finalists.
There were 35 photography submissions from where 18 finalists were chosen.
Domek was one of the lucky winners.

“The Memphis Airport is all about creating something, or painting or drawing what you think represents Memphis in your own way,” Domek said. “Usually a lot of people do the bridge, a landscape of Memphis, but I wanted to incorporate Memphis rappers because I love rap music.”
Domek’s painting is titled Memphis Rappers 2020. The painting features Moneybagg Yo, NLE Choppa and Young Dolph.
Students were provided art supplies by the airport’s community foundation for the contest.
“I used paints, acrylic, and it took me about four months and the planning took a good two months before that,” Domek explained. “So, it was really about six months in preparing.”
Domek says she hopes those traveling through the airport will learn more about Memphis and have more of an appreciation for art.
“I hope they can see what art really is about,” Domek said. “How we go into different ways of creativity. How we provide, you know, our own way of doing things.”
Most of the artwork is available for purchase to the public.
Proceeds will go to the student artist.
